Werewolves on One Phone: The Village Game Without a Game Master

Werewolves on One Phone: The Village Game Without a Game Master

Werewolves is the king of social deduction games, but it has always had one problem: somebody has to sit out as the narrator. Cluso's version removes that job completely. One phone runs the night, everyone plays, and the lying starts at dawn.

The Basics

Werewolves is played with 6 to 20 players and is part of Cluso Pro. The app deals the roles for you: most players are Villagers, one to four are Werewolves depending on the size of the group, there's always a Seer, and from seven players there's a Healer too. Everyone sees the cast, but nobody sees who got what. The village wins the second the last werewolf is thrown out. The wolves win as soon as there are as many of them as there are of everyone else.

The Night Lap

Here's the clever part. At night the phone goes round the whole circle once, in seat order, and every player takes it — Villagers included. Whoever holds the phone is the only one looking; everyone else keeps their eyes up. Wolves pick a victim, the Seer reads one player and learns wolf or not, and the Healer shields someone (never the same person two nights running). Because everyone gets a turn, being handed the phone proves nothing about you.

Day, Debate and the Vote

At dawn the phone reveals who the wolves took — or that someone was shielded and everyone survived. Then the day begins: a timer of one, two or three minutes runs while the phone sits face up on the table and you accuse, deny and lie badly. When time's up, you vote. Choose hands up and counted out loud, or a secret ballot where the phone goes round one voter at a time. Ties go to a runoff or nobody leaves, depending on your setup.

Strategy for Wolves

Look innocent by day, and don't be the quietest person in the room. When there's more than one wolf, each names three targets worth 5, 3 and 1 points, without seeing the other's list — the highest total gets eaten. It's how the pack agrees without speaking: put the loudest villager somewhere on your list and you'll usually land together.

Strategy for the Village

Seer, sit on your results. Say it too early and you're tomorrow's dinner. Healer, protect whoever made the strongest case yesterday. Villagers, watch the vote as closely as the talk: wolves rarely vote for each other, and a wasted day is a gift to them — they still get their night. Before you start, agree one house rule out loud: whoever holds the phone is the only one looking. Nothing in this game survives a peeker.

Werewolves is at its best when everyone is in the game and nobody is stuck narrating. Sit in a circle, open Werewolves in Cluso, deal the roles and find the wolves before they outnumber you.
